Hot air is used in all kinds of applications that involve connecting components. When it comes to connecting plastics, in particular, there are many applications where hot air is used to melt the plastic. Once the joining zone has been melted, the components are joined together under pressure. This creates a secure connection.
Another method for joining components is hot-air riveting. After assembling the two joining parts the rivet of a plastic part is heated up so far that it softens and can be reshaped. Riveting is primarily used when a plastic component has to be mechanically connected to another component that is made from dissimilar materials.
Gluing is another connection technique. In the case of the gluing process, hot air is used during upstream and downstream processes, e.g., for cleaning, drying, and curing.
In the context of electrical engineering, a large number of connections have to be soldered to ensure good electrical contact and to make sure that components are mechanically secure. Often, the solder is melted by using special nozzles to target hot air at the solder joint. The required connection is achieved once the solder has cooled.
